Includes a reading group guide.Ĭanadian novelist, short-story and children's fiction writer, Marian Engel was a passionate activist for the national and international writer’s cause. As provocative and powerful now as when it was first published. What she discovers will change her life forever. Irresistibly, Lou is led along a path of emotional and sexual self-awakening, as she explores the limits of her own animal nature. Lou’s imagination is soon overtaken by the island’s past occupants, whose deep fascination with bears gradually becomes her own. Eager to investigate the estate’s curious history, she is shocked to discover that the island has one other a bear. When an unusual field assignment comes her way, she jumps at the chance to travel to a remote island in northern Ontario, where she will spend the summer cataloguing a library that belonged to an eccentric nineteenth-century colonel. Lou is a lonely librarian who spends her days in the dusty archives of the Historical Institute. ![]() The winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction, Marian Engel’s most famous – and most controversial – novel tells the unforgettable story of a woman transformed by a primal, erotic relationship. ![]() ![]() The book might appeal to fans of religious fiction, but those looking for a good historical tale will be disappointed. ![]() In fact, had the headings of the chapters not given the dates, I wouldn’t have known that parts of the book took place in the 5th century. Another reader here says that there’s not a lot of historical detail here, and I agree with their assessment. ![]() The author’s grasp of early medieval Christianity is sound, but I thought she resorted to clichés in many places, especially when it came to the Irish people. Where’s her personality? Even Brigid herself wasn’t that appealing of a character, suffering from a lack of character development over the span of about 15 years. It’s rare that I complain that a book I don’t like is too short but I thought that the story could have been fleshed out a lot more, especially the characters of Alexandra, who never comes across as more than a cold appraiser. The idea of the story is appealing, but the execution of the book is rather lackluster, I’m afraid. ![]() The story is told as both a straight narrative and a series of letters written by a Roman spy named Decius, sent to Ireland to uncover possibly heresy. The story goes back and forth between Bridgid, a 5th-century woman chosen by Saint Patrick himself to convert the Irish into Christianity and a modern-day appraiser of medieval objects named Alex, who is invited to Kildare to appraise a book that the nuns there own. ![]() How I acquired my copy: ARC through the Vineīrigid of Kildare is a split-time novel. Each of the three stages has 16 total levels of difficulty, which take the same architecture and scenarios, but change enemy spawns, events, and circumstances within that level. ![]() How the game makes up for the lack of locales, however, is in the different skill levels of each stage.Ībout on par with the arcade version. Ghost Squad is made up of only three levels in total, each about 15 minutes long, which basically equates to one chapter of Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles not a whole lot. SEGA AM2 could have easily taken the original game, added IR functionality, and called it a day, but the team instead introduced new modes and options that - along with a competitive price point - really saved the experience as far as we're concerned. ![]() That isn't to say Ghost Squad is a straight-up port of the original arcade cabinet it isn't. ![]() ![]() ![]() If something happens fast, it's "quicker than germs multiplying in a chocolate fountain." Four actresses – Katherine Rudeseal, Belinda Keller, Jordan Mullaney and Felcia Potts – appear on stage to adopt Rivenbark's homey, snarky, chattin'-with-the-gal-pals tone that, while more profane, will be familiar to readers of her newspaper column as the performers hold forth on such subjects as gym etiquette, public displays of affection and texting at the dinner table. It's essentially the same show with new material, some of which doesn't appear in Rivenbark's book. If you liked "Bitches" the first time, you'll like it again.
